A Project with Two Connected Public Purposes

Old Forge combines a proposed closed-loop pumped-storage facility with a source-controlled program for the Old Forge Borehole. The energy facility is intended to store electricity when the regional system has available supply and return electricity when the system needs capacity, flexibility, and reliability. The water program is being advanced through REA's Old Forge Borehole Water-Recovery Program.

Old Forge is a pumped-storage and water-recovery project. Any separately sponsored customer — including a large load or industrial facility — must independently address its own siting, power and water requirements, infrastructure, approvals, and community commitments.

A Long-Term Water-Recovery Program

The Old Forge Borehole has discharged mine-impacted water into the Lackawanna River for more than six decades. REA is advancing a water-recovery program that brings together treatment engineering, permitting, financing, monitoring, and long-term operating responsibility. The proposed pumped-storage project is intended to help support the continuing cost of this work.

Long-Duration Storage for a Changing Grid

Pumped storage can absorb electricity during charging periods and provide dispatchable generation during times of system need. The Old Forge Pumped Storage project uses two ternary units to provide operating flexibility and an approximately ten-hour storage duration that is materially different from short-duration battery storage. Potential services are being advanced through FERC licensing, PJM and PPL interconnection and planning processes, equipment design, operational studies, and commercial agreements.
